What surprises me is that in 2018 it still requires so much work just to get a CGI script running on a server. It should be easier.

One of the great strengths about PHP is it's ubiquity. Most web hosts make it super simple to get a PHP site up and running. Often it's no more complex than popping files into a folder.

I found that trying to deploy a Ruby on Rails site to be quite the chore. There's so much you need to know and get familiar with. Granted PHP powered sites are getting more complex when you throw in Composer but it's still a heck of a lot easier for simple sites.
